Fr.
Phil Hoebing, a native of Melrose Township here in
Adams County, is a retired Professor Emertius of
Philosophy. He was born on July 2, 1923. He received his education from St.
Joseph Theological Seminary, Philosophy from Our Lady of the Angels in
Cleveland, the University of San Francisco, Catholic University of America
(sabbatical), the Franciscan Institute at St. Bonaventure University, and
Indiana University (NEH Grant).
Having been taught and trained by Dr. Matthew Lipman
at Montclair State University, he has extensively taught "Philosophy for
Children." In addition to conducting workshops, he has taught at QU since
1953 in the areas of Logic, Ethics, Environmental Ethics, Bioethics, and
Medieval Philosophy.
Fr. Phil is a member of the Missouri Folklore Society and is very much
involved in topics concerning folklore, environmental ethics, Ecofeminism and the Environment, among others.
A member of the Missouri Folklore Society, Fr. Phil is very much involved in
topics concerning folklore. Adams County is well known in folklore circles
for Harry Hyatt who wrote, "Folklore from Adams County, Illinois",
which is a wonderful collection of folklore from the midwest
United States.
He has been National Spiritual Director of the Western Catholic Union since
1998.
Having published many articles, Fr. Phil has also written two books: Wildcat
Whistle - a collection of folklore and stories from veteran hunters and
fishermen along the Mississippi River, and Legends of Lover’s Leap.
He received an honorary PhD from Quincy University in 2000 and the "Pro Pontifice et Ecclesia" Award from the Springfield
Diocese in 2002.
In addition to the above, he is also involved with weekly meetings of
"The Catfish Club" and monthly meetings with the "Socrates
Cafe" - an international discussion club. In those meetings with
similarly interested persons stories, philosophical views, and personal
experiences, are shared.
